Cortez Plaza

Bradenton, Florida - circa 1960

Nice aerial view of Cortez Plaza Mall. I'm currently researching this one. Don't know a lot about it yet.

This mall was razed in the late 80's and rebuilt in a typical strip mall format with a Publix, Montgomery Ward, and Circuit City. The Montgomery Ward is now a Burlington Coat Factory. The orange grove in the upper left corner of the picture is now the Desoto Square Mall.

Check the Gottscho-Schleisner Collection at the Library of Congress for B&W pics of Cortez Plaza in it's grand heyday. If it's not against policies at this website, I'll include a link to one of the pics: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/h?pp/gottscho:@field(NUMBER+@band(gsc+5a29609))

My mother use to work at Gordon's Jeweler's, which had terrific "neon and steel" signage. The place was full of character and a center of attraction for years! :)

This place also had a Walgreens and Belk-Lindseys in 1965 when I moved to Bradenton. And a place called Jarvis Shops for women.
