The Daily Mall Reader: Winter Park Mall

A daily dose of mall-related reading...

Now this mall feels like home - and it is

St. Petersburg Times - October 11, 2003

(Excerpt) It didn't look like much from the outside, but then it used to be a Dillard's.

But inside? Wow!

What was an anchor of the Winter Park Mall, 10 minutes north of downtown Orlando, is now a place to live, work or both. The Lofts of Winter Park Village is a strange combo of things: an artsy loft-like experience in a non-urban setting. A residential building that has its own curator and interesting art displayed everywhere inside, it is actually part of an open-air mall with commercial space on its ground floor. You can live right above the Cheesecake Factory.

It was the usual story with the Winter Park Mall; it got old. It was too small. Other malls opened that were glitzier. So it died. The mall was knocked down except Dillard's and in its place the new type of "lifestyle" mall was built.

That Dillard's store originally opened as an Ivey's. I was there once, in 1978. Ivey's was at one end of the mall, and vintage 2-story Penney's (old logo) store was at the other end. In the mall was a great Woolworth's store, and Walgreen's that had it's own lunch grill too. Winter Park Mall was already on the downslide when compared with the newer, glitzier Altamonte Mall (then Florida's largest), but that unique fountain (as seen in many postcards) was really something to see!

Ivey's was good... never saw that store, but was at Ivey's in SC and NC a lot. Very upscale and very cosmopolitan for the times. Like most of the great stores, it eventually was consumed.
